My landscape paintings are
inspired by three important elements in my life.
The first one is my childhood. Born in Egypt, and raised in Italy and
the Middle East, I am accustomed to countries where the sun is bright
and powerful. This affects my choice of vibrant and warm colors.
The second one is my move to New England, which has been my home since
1981. Being used to places where water is scarce and the vegetation is
rare, I was struck by the luminous richness of the surrounding
landscape. The pink and mauve of the springtime trees, the red and
green of the summer farms surrounded by flowers, or the yellow and
mauve of the New England fields, fills me with a strong desire to
capture the essence of all that beauty.
Third, but not least, I have been inspired by the Post Impressionist
school because colors and mood seem more important to me than details
and realistic images.
I choose oil as a medium because of the power and brightness of its
pigments. First I apply broad strokes of primary colors which are then
mixed, when still wet, by smaller strokes to create areas of shadows
and mixed tones.
When the painting is dry, I add the final touches. More visual details
are introduced, while trying to enhance the essence, vibrancy, and
brightness of New England landscapes, which still fascinate me after
many years. |
